The group of electronic and magnetic materials of the National TU of Athens has got extensive expertise in developing nano-structured and nano-sized materials for biomedical applications. The group facilities include several methods for material manufacturing, particularly several times of superparamagnetic nanoparticles (SPIONs) as well as their implementation in certain applications, structural characterization facilities, properties determination and modeling of structure – property correlation.
A priority project concerns magnetic driving of SPIONs within the human body for certain applications. A long term project concerns the development of a theragnostic device to determine the spatial distribution of magnetic nanoparticles in the body with the consequent possibility of controlling their temperature and temperature gradient. The group if collaborating with John’s Hopkins University, USA (in the field of magnetic modeling), the Slovak Academy of Sciences (complimentary structural characterization), SINTEF, Norway (development of new devices and applications), the TU Vienna (in-vitro magnetic characterization), etc.
